Held on 2 August at the Della & Seng Gee Guild Hall at NUSS Kent Ridge Guild House, Peranakan Malam Joget was a vibrant celebration of Singapore’s rich multicultural heritage. Organised by the Music Section of the NUSS Cultural Sub-Committee, the event brought together the sights, sounds, and flavours of the Peranakan world in a joyful evening of culture and community.
Guests arrived in their finest sarong kebayas, batik shirts, and beaded accessories, setting the tone for a colourful night. In his welcome address, NUSS Vice President and Cultural Sub-Committee Chairperson Mr Vincent Rasa reflected on the values of inclusivity and togetherness — ideals that resonate strongly during National Day month.
Among the guests were Mr Daniel Chia, Chairman of the Membership Sub-Committee; Ms Serene Gan, Deputy Chairperson of the Cultural Sub-Committee; Mr Keith Alan Liew, Chairman of F&B; Mr Derrick Loh, CEO of NUSS; and Mr Edward S Tay, NUSS Past President (2020 – 2024).
The evening’s highlight was an authentic Peranakan buffet featuring beef rendang, kueh pie tee, chap chye, and a colourful spread of traditional kuehs that had guests raving.
The Friends Alliance Band (FAB) from the NUSS Music Section kept the energy high with two lively sets — Joget with Love and Sambal & Soul — blending joget, pop yeh-yeh, jazz, and Latin grooves that had everyone dancing and singing along.
Fashion and flair lit up the Best Dressed Nyonyas and Babas Contest, while lucky draws with prizes sponsored by Mr Daniel Chia and the NUSS Music Section added to the fun.
More than just a night of entertainment, Peranakan Malam Joget was a celebration of shared heritage and the joy of community — a reminder that tradition lives on when we come together to honour it.
The NUSS Music Section is a vibrant community, with events known for their great music, warm camaraderie, and lively dancing. Look forward to more memorable experiences — stay tuned for upcoming highlights at www.nuss.org.sg
