NUSS Spotlight– NUSS DanceSport
At NUSS, DanceSport is where movement meets community. From weekly practice nights and line dance sessions to bi-monthly Social DanceSport Nights, quarterly dance Workshops (line dance, sequence dance etc), and quarterly Dinner & Dance (D&D), there is something for everyone—- from first timers finding their rhythm to seasoned dancers perfecting their skills.
For Convenor Mr Tan Peng Yong, DanceSport is more than just learning steps. “It’s about enjoying the music, moving with confidence, and most importantly, building connections with people who share the same passion,” he shares.
On Wednesdays, the Kent Ridge Guild House Aerobics Room transforms into a vibrant dance floor, alive with everything from the graceful Waltz to the high-energy Salsa. Fridays at Mandalay Guild House bring the joy of line dancing, where coordinated steps, good music, and shared laughter create an uplifting atmosphere.
“The highlight of the year is definitely the quarterly Dinner and Dance,” Peng Yong says with a smile. “It’s a night when everyone dresses up, enjoys fine dining and live music, and the dance floor is never empty. The energy is incredible.” Often a sold-out event, it is the perfect blend of elegance, social connection, and celebration. The next D&D will take place on 27 September, promising another unforgettable night on the dance floor. Between these grand occasions, DanceSport Nights keep the momentum alive — the most recent, held on 22 August, saw members gathering for an evening of relaxed dancing and camaraderie.
For those hesitant to join, Peng Yong offers reassurance: “You don’t have to be a great dancer to start — you just need to be willing to take the first step. The community here is warm and supportive, and we grow together, one dance at a time.” NUSS Dancesport conducts weekly social dance classes on Tuesdays and Saturdays at Kent Ridge Guild House, and line dance classes on Wednesdays at Mandalay Guild House.
More than steps and sequences, DanceSport at NUSS is about friendships, confidence, and the joy of staying active. As Peng Yong says, “Dance keeps you moving, keeps you smiling, and keeps you connected.”

Stepping Forward: An Interview with Convenor Mr Tan Peng Yong
Q: What inspired you to take on the role of convenor for NUSS DanceSport?
A: I was inspired by the challenge of leading a vibrant DanceSport community at NUSS – one that brings together members with diverse interests across the different genres of dance.
Q: How would you describe the DanceSport community at NUSS to someone new?
A: We are a warm and inclusive community made up of members and their guests who enjoy different dance genres. Despite our varied interests, there is a strong sense of “Unity in Diversity”, which makes DanceSport at NUSS truly special.
Q: Which events or classes are the most popular among members, and why?
A: Our DanceSport Nights and the Dinner & Dance are especially popular. These events allow members to showcase their skills, enjoy social dancing, and most importantly, build lasting friendships through a shared love of dance.
Q: What has been the most memorable DanceSport moment for you so far?
A: One of the proudest moments was when our very own DanceSport Section member (and former DanceSport Section Committee member), Ms June Foo, was named the 2025 NUSS Sportswoman of the Year. Her achievements on both local and international stages, combined with her contributions as a committee member, reflect the passion and excellence within our community.
Q: What advice would you give to someone who is shy about dancing or joining a social dance group?
A: Just take the first step. Join a class or event, keep practicing, and most importantly, enjoy the supportive community around you.
Q: In your opinion, how does dance contribute to building community spirit at NUSS?
A: Dance naturally brings people together. At NUSS, our classes and events create opportunities for members to connect, share their love for dance, and build friendships. I am very proud of our DanceSport Section Committee, who volunteer their time and energy to keep the spirit vibrant and welcoming for members of all ages.
