NUSS Members’ Travelogue: 11 Days of Adventure in Mongolia

Contributions by members Helen Lim, Goh Chye Kim, and Joachin Tan

From 23 August to 2 September 2025, 15 NUSS members and their companions embarked on an 11-day adventure across Mongolia — a land of vast horizons, dramatic landscapes, and enduring traditions. The itinerary offered a tapestry of experiences: camel and horse rides across the plains, nights in traditional gers (yurts), and special dinners under star-strewn skies.

The journey began in Ulaanbaatar, where the capital’s modern skyline rises alongside monasteries and heritage sites. “It was fascinating to see centuries of tradition stand right next to gleaming glass towers — a city in transition,” shared Chye Kim.

In the Gobi Desert, the sheer vastness left the group in awe. Camel rides and towering dunes gave way to evenings under the brilliance of the Milky Way. “Lying back on the sand and seeing the galaxy stretch above us was humbling — it made us feel so small, yet so connected,” remembered Helen. Local drivers impressed with their uncanny instinct, navigating endless tracks without the aid of GPS.

The western province of Bayan-Ölgii brought members into the world of the Kazakh Eagle Hunters. As Helen observed, eagle hunting is “not just a skill, but a legacy passed down through generations.” Hospitality proved just as memorable. “What struck me most was the generosity — they had so little, but gave so much,” reflected Joachin.

Unexpected detours became cherished highlights. A surprise stop at the tranquil Lake Tolbo, a hearty home-cooked meal with an eagle hunter’s family, and even a light-hearted sketching session during a flight delay all added to the magic. “Only our group could turn a flight delay into an impromptu art jam — we laughed till our sides hurt,” said Chye Kim.

For many, the true treasure of the journey lay not just in Mongolia’s landscapes, but in the bonds forged along the way. “The laughter, the shared stories, the little acts of looking out for each other — that was the real highlight for me,” added Joachin.

This Mongolian adventure was more than a holiday. It was a reminder of the joy of discovery, the value of cultural exchange, and the timeless lesson to “coexist with nature to achieve contentment.”

Looking ahead, members can anticipate more curated journeys — including a Spain Wine Tour and more in 2026.
