Shared Horizons with the Land Down Under

From 8th to 19th June 2023, the National University of Singapore Choir (NUSS Choir) embarked on a musical journey Down Under to Brisbane, Australia. The Choir was cordially invited to perform and join forces with the choirs under the esteemed guidance of Dr. Graeme Morton, renowned as one of Australia’s most eclectic choral musicians. Following the lifting of COVID-19 travel restrictions, this overseas trip was highly anticipated amongst the choral members.

For this trip, the NUSS Choir embraced the theme of “Shared Horizons.” Much like the horizon seen from different corners of the world, the choir showcased an array of songs from various places and eras. Yet, when sung, these seemingly distinct melodies harmoniously blend together and unites people through the universal love of music.

Throughout their performances, the Choir showcased a diverse repertoire. They presented songs from local composers and arrangers, highlighting the cultural richness and heritage of Singapore as a melting pot of races, cultures, and languages. Moreover, the choral programme featured compositions from renowned Australian composers alongside beloved popular hit favorites.

A highlight during their journey was singing alongside Dr. Morton’s Cathedral Choir in Sunday mass at the majestic St John’s Cathedral in Brisbane on 11th June 2023. Later, they also had the honour of collaborating with the Brisbane Chamber Choir and University of Queensland Chamber Singers in a concert at the same venue on 18th June 2023. The cathedral’s grand architecture and reverberating acoustics left many of the choral members in awe!

As part of their international exchange, the NUSS Choir also engaged in joint activities and performances with visiting choirs from Toowoomba and Stanthorpe, forming new friendships and creating unforgettable memories. The journey allowed them to explore the beauty of Brisbane and Queensland, further enriching their experience.

Through their performances and interactions, the NUSS Choir sought to inspire a universal love for music that transcends geographical and cultural boundaries. As they return to Singapore, the NUSS Choir cherishes the memories of their Australian adventure and eagerly await future collaborations with other international choirs.
